ReadingThis year, we will be using a reading series called Journeys. There are many components and resources to this series. The curriculum includes spelling words, grammar skills, reading strategies, vocabulary words, fluency practice, and language skills. Each week, students will read a new story in the Journeys textbook. Throughout the week, we will practice comprehension skills to go along with the story. Homework: A to Z Reading Challenge Each trimester (12 weeks), students will set a ‘goal’ for how many ‘letters of the alphabet’ they think they can complete within the trimester. This goal will be discussed and needs to be realistic. If they meet their goal, they will receive 4 raffle tickets to use in our end of trimester book raffle! Students will also receive a raffle ticket for every two ‘letters of the alphabet’ that they complete. At the end of each trimester, we will hold a book raffle in the classroom. This raffle will include 4 (or more) books that students will have the chance to win! The more you read, the more chances you have to win! My expectation is that students read every night! How long and what books your child reads should be based on their interest level and ability. Students will set a new goal for Trimester 2. Check in with your child and see what their goal is! :) SpellingStudents will have a list of 20 spelling words each week. Monday: lists administered Friday: Spelling assessment Spelling City is a website that can be used to practice the weekly spelling lists. This can be accessed by clicking on the button below. *Please Note: even though these are listed as Mrs. Osterhouse's spelling lists, they ARE correct for Mrs. Wolf's classroom! Match the 'Lesson' number to your child's weekly list. WritingWe are working on writing opinion essays. Students are developing a 'thesis' and working on supporting that thesis through examples and details.
